Epidemiological profile of congenital syphilis cases in Pará State, Brazil: An analysis from 2011 to 2021

Introdução

The spirochete Treponema Pallidum is the etiological agent of Syphilis, a venereal treponematosis that is one of the main Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI). Congenital syphilis (CS), in turn, occurs when there is vertical transmission of T. pallidum from a previously infected pregnant woman to her offspring, either intrauterine or during the peripartum. Thus, congenital syphilis is associated with negative outcomes in the peripartum, such as perinatal death and neurological involvement, such as meningitis, hydrocephalus, and delays in neuropsychomotor development.

Objetivo

The aim of this study was to analyze the epidemiological profile of congenital syphilis cases in the state of Pará.

Método

This is an analytical, retrospective, quantitative study, based on secondary data obtained from the Brazilian Unified Health System databases. Data were collected regarding the characteristics of patients with congenital syphilis in the State of Pará in the period between 2011 and 2021. For data analysis, descriptive statistics were used by means of absolute and relative frequencies.

Resultados e Conclusões

The data showed a total of 7162 cases of congenital syphilis in the state of Pará in the period between 2011 and 2021. The patients were mostly male (49.3%, since 3.53% of the total data were ignored), brown (83%), diagnosed within 6 days of life (95.8%). As for the maternal data, they were between 20 and 24 years old (34.2%), had incomplete elementary school education (36.2%), were diagnosed with syphilis during prenatal care, underwent treatment (61.6%), and had untreated sexual partners (61.36%).
It is notorious that there is a large number of cases of congenital syphilis in Pará and several factors contribute to the perpetuation of the disease. Thus, early detection is of utmost importance for a good prognosis and for the prevention of complications, especially neurological ones.
