Evaluation of quality of life in teenagers with generalized anxiety disorder

Introdução

Adolescence is a period of rapid physical, emotional, cognitive, and social development. Community-based studies of adolescents suggest that nearly 10% of teenagers have some type of anxiety disorder, which decrease the quality of life. Furthermore, there is continuity between high levels of adolescence anxiety and anxiety disorders in adulthood. Scale are tools that help in both, diagnosis and treatment.

Objetivo

to evaluate the quality of life of teenagers with diagnosis of generalized anxiety disorder enrolled in public school in a city of state of Paraná, Brazil.

Método

it were filled two questionnaires, Multidimensional Anxiety Scale for Children (MASC) and Autoquestionnaire Qualité de Vie Enfant Image (AUQEI) by adolescents between 11 and 17 years old, both gender, enrolled in public school in a city at the Western of State of Paraná, Brazil. For this study, the cut off to MASC score was ≥ 56, situation this which subject should seek a health mental professional. For AUQEI scale, teenagers with score ≤ 48 were evaluated as low quality of life. Analyze statistic was made by Variance Analysis, Cochran-Mantel-Haesnzel and x2 Tests P values below 0.05 indicated statistical significance. This research was approved by the Research Ethics Committee of the Western Paraná State University under the protocol number 5.132.138/2021.

Resultados

252 adolescents were analyzed, which filled two questionnaires-MASC and AUQEI. Of this participants, 125 were male and 127 female. Aged from 11 to 17 years old. Concerning MASC scale, 89 (35.3%) teenagers had positive score to generalyzed anxiety and, of these, 53 (59.5%) presented low quality of life according AUQEI questionnaire. About gender, 63 (%) were female with MASC score ≥ 56 (positive score to anxiety)

Conclusão

In this research, there was relationship between gender and anxiety, with predominance of female (p<0.001). Furthermore, there was evidence of association between anxiety and quality of life (p <0.036), when ruled out gender. This study show that prevention, early diagnosis and follow up of teenagers with anxiety improve several aspects of quality of life. Anxiety disorders are likely to be lifelong conditions, yet with effective interventions, adolescents can minimize their influence on overall life functioning and quality of life.
