EPIDEMIOLOGICAL PROFILE OF MENINGITIS IN CHILDREN AND ADOLESCENTS IN 4 MACRO-REGIONS OF MINAS GERAIS (2014-2024)

Introdução

Bacterial and viral meningitis are serious diseases that can affect children and adolescents, resulting in worrying morbidity and mortality rates.

Objetivo

his study aims to analyze the number of hospitalizations cases due to bacterial and viral meningitis in the population from 0 to 14 years old in the macro-regions from the Jequitinhonha, Central, South, and North of Minas Gerais between 2014 and 2024.

Método

This is an ecological study conducted with data from the Brazilian Hospital Information System (SIH/SUS). We analyzed the number of cases in each of the 4 macro-regions using descriptive statistics and a joinpoint regression analysis. The annual percent change (APC) in the number of hospitalizations was considered statistically significant under a p-value of 0.05.

Resultados

There were a total of 20 meningitis hospitalization cases in the Jequitinhonha macro-region, followed by 927 cases in the Central, 90 cases in the South, and 144 cases in the North macro-regions. The results from the joinpoint analysis shows a stable trend in hospitalizations due to bacterial meningitis in the Jequitinhonha and Central macro-regions. The South has shown a significant increase in cases from 2014 to 2016 (APC = 105.51) followed by a significant decrease in cases from 2016 to 2024 (APC = -18.76). In the North, there was a significant increase in cases from 2014 to 2022 (APC = 16.23) with a not significant decrease since 2022 (-37.50). Regarding viral meningitis cases, there is a stable trend in the Jequitinhonha and South macro-regions, each with less than 10 cases a year. However, there is a significant decrease in viral meningitis in the Central (APC = -15.50) and North (APC = 19.94) macro-regions.

Conclusão

It was possible to see important differences in the hospitalizations cases for bacterial and viral meningitis across the 4 different macro-regions. There was a significant decrease in viral meningitis in half of the macro-regions, with a stabilizing trend in the other half, indicating an overall decline in the disease. Bacterial meningitis remained stable in the Central and Jequitinhonha macro-regions, with an ongoing decrease trend both in the South and in the North. The data presented is relevant to the ongoing epidemiological surveillance of vaccination campaigns against meningococcal meningitis. The decrease in viral and bacterial transmission indicates the effectiveness of prevention measures and the need to sustain them.
